the Gamelan Maker and Innovator
In 1987, Suhirdjan began to assemble and make gamelan instruments out of iron, brass and bronze, including specially commissioned instruments, specific tunings (chromatic and otherwise) and innovations. In 25 years complete ensembles and individual instruments have been sent to over 100 schools, music and art organizations, and individuals in the US, Canada, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, Israel, the Czech Republic, Hong Kong, Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and Taiwan. Suhirdjan personally assembled, tuned and played each instrument before sending it off to its new home.
